Chasing the light……..

Living where I do has real advantages. From my base in Co Durham I’m no more than a couple of hours from the Yorkshire Dales, the North Yorks moors and coast, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty including Teesdale and Weardale, the Lake District, the Northumberland National Park and even the Scottish borders.

As a landscape photographer I couldn’t ask for more. Or could I?

The landforms are there, in all their rich variety. Sometimes a composition presents itself just by turning a corner. Who could argue with the graphic shapes of northern castle and cathedrals? Or fail to be impressed by the sweep of the sand dunes in the bays of Northumberland? Not forgetting for one moment the majestic Lakeland peaks.

So what’s missing?

99% of the time what’s missing is light. It’s always there, of course, (except when it’s dark!), but the light I chase is the type that transforms a subject from the ordinary to the something special. It doesn’t often happen but when it does it’s worth the wait and the many trips that produced little or no result.
